The organo-mineral fertilizer company FOMI has just completed six years of service to the nation by supplying farmers with high-quality fertilizers that do not degrade the soil, increase production, and protect the environment.
Farmers using these fertilizers are satisfied because they have already seen the difference between these fertilizers and conventional fertilizers in terms of agricultural production. FOMI is therefore a company that contributes to the country’s development, as agriculture is one of the major pillars of national development. It is in this same spirit that the company hosts student interns from various universities to enhance their skills by building on the knowledge acquired in class, and their practical work is carried out on FOMI’s premises. The Research Department at FOMI warmly welcomes these students who have studied agriculture at universities in Burundi or abroad.
At the beginning of April, some students from Lumière University in Bujumbura, undertaking academic internships at FOMI (the Moroccan Foundation for Agricultural and Rural Development), where they are supervised by technicians from FOMI’s research department, said they were expecting results at the end of their internships. Some said they were eager to learn how FOMI fertilizers behave on plants compared to conventional fertilizers, also known as chemical fertilizers, while others stated they came to acquire knowledge from this company, which plays an important role in the country’s development, so that they, in turn, could use this knowledge to develop the country and their families. They asked FOMI officials to continue providing opportunities for other students who want to conduct research and apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom. Where we found them in the field, they were preparing the fields by applying organic fertilizer in preparation for planting. Jackson Bayubahe, head of the agronomic research department at FOMI, said that hosting student interns is an honor for FOMI, as it represents another contribution to the country’s development. He stated that these students have been assigned to different sectors according to their field of study. He believes that sustainable development is based on agriculture. Bayubahe Jackson also said that FOMI fertilizers contribute to sustainable development due to their manufacturing process, because, according to him, these fertilizers increase production, restore soil health, and protect the environment.
Jackson Bayubahe says that these students from Lumière University of Bujumbura will be researching plants such as legumes and rice to see how these fertilizers perform on agricultural production compared to conventional fertilizers. He asks them to take measurements and ask for clarification wherever they encounter ambiguities. He says that many students come to do internships at FOMI because they find it advantageous in terms of the training they receive there.
