On May 12, 2020, FOMI went to assist the victims of the Gatumba floods. Accompanied by Mrs. Nadine Gacuti, Governor of Bujumbura Province, a team of FOMI employees brought food supplies such as rice, corn flour, cottonseed oil, sugar, and non-food items such as soap.

In her welcoming remarks, the Governor of Bujumbura stated that FOMI had come to demonstrate its affection for the country in general and the province of Bujumbura in particular. She thanked FOMI for its assistance to the victims of the Gatumba floods.

Herménégilde MANYANGE, FOMI’s Director of Research, who represented FOMI on behalf of the Director General who was unable to attend, revealed that the aid consisted of 7 tons of rice; 4.5 tons of cornmeal; 600 liters of cottonseed oil; 1 ton of sugar; and 4,800 bars of laundry soap. These products have a value of 25,000,000 Burundian francs.

As a reminder, these floods have displaced more than 2,000 households in the Gatumba area, who are now grouped into three sites: Maramvya (496 households), Kigaramango (1,365 households), and Kinyinya II (284 households), with others scattered among surrounding families. An appeal is being made to everyone to help these people in need.
